A O'Reilly continua colocar muita atenção à questão em torno de Data Science e publicou, já este mês, um estudo muito interessante e actual sobre a temática. Chama-se "Analyzing the Analyzers An Introspective Survey of Data Scientists and Their Work".

Enquanto ramo com recrudescida importância no seio das Ciências da Informação, a Data Science merece bastante atenção na comunidade académica norte-americana (entre outras). Eis um exemplo daquilo a que  nos referimos:

"It will be interesting to see the effectiveness of the new analytics, data science, and business intelligence Master’s-level degrees that many colleges and universities are now starting to offer. The history of many current data scientists are those who pivoted through a variety of fields, giving them the breadth and depth needed for the field almost accidentally. It remains to be seen whether new degrees will offer the scope and practicality to provide the software engineering, statistical thinking, and domain skills needed to be immediately effective, or if additional experience will be necessary." (op. cit., página 24)

INTRODUÇÃO À CIÊNCIA DOS DADOS

Por intermédio da Coursera, uma plataforma online de ensino superior gratuita e que reúne (até ao momento) 62 universidades de referência internacionais (e.g. Duke, Stanford, Rutgers, John Hopkins, La Sapienza, Barcelona, Melbourne, etc.), vai ter início no dia 1 de Maio de 2013 um curso de introdução sobre uma área tida como emergente nas Ciências da Computação e com perspectivas de desenvolvimento e de empregabilidade muito interessantes: 

- Ciência dos Dados.

O currículo deste curso introdutório (tipo 101), a ministrar pela prestigiada Universidade de Washington,  está disponível em https://www.coursera.org/course/datasci. Eis um excerto:

"Commerce and research is being transformed by data-driven discovery and prediction. Skills required for data analytics at massive levels – scalable data management on and off the cloud, parallel algorithms, statistical modeling, and proficiency with a complex ecosystem of tools and platforms – span a variety of disciplines and are not easy to obtain through conventional curricula. Tour the basic techniques of data science, including both SQL and NoSQL solutions for massive data management (e.g., MapReduce and contemporaries), algorithms for data mining (e.g., clustering and association rule mining), and basic statistical modeling (e.g., logistic and non-linear regression)."


Num artigo recentemente publicado pelo NY Times (1104/2013) escreve-se o seguinte: 

"Universities can hardly turn out data scientists fast enough. To meet demand from employers, the United States will need to increase the number of graduates with skills handling large amounts of data by as much as 60 percent, according to a report by McKinsey Global Institute. There will be almost half a million jobs in five years, and a shortage of up to 190,000 qualified data scientists, plus a need for 1.5 million executives and support staff who have an understanding of data." No início, juntou-se um pequeno video introdutório sobre o curso  em Data Science (ASc)pela Universidade de Washington (UW).

Para além da sua gratuitidade, quem sabe se o potencial de adesão que esta iniciativa tem (pela sua inovação e perspectivas de discussão e empregabilidade) não pode lançar as bases para um novo grupo de trabalho, no seio da APDSI?
